Privacy policy

Updated September 14, 2026. Sacred Texts Reader is maintained by Chirag Kushwaha. For privacy questions, contact chiragkushwaha1811+sacred@gmail.com.

Reading and information on your device

You can read without an email account. Bookmarks, reading history, highlights, notes, reflections, reading plans, preferences and practice progress are stored in your browser. An optional display name and birthday are used for personalization. Exporting or sharing a backup transfers the information you choose to export. Device speech voices are provided by your browser or operating system; some voices may use their provider’s online services.

Information sent over the network

Our hosting provider (Hostinger) receives the network requests needed to deliver pages, searches, images and APIs. Requests reveal an IP address and browser information and may reveal the texts you request. Reading and search interests may reveal religious beliefs. Archived content comes from the Internet Archive and other configured archive sources; some images may be loaded directly from the Internet Archive.

Error reports contain an error category, a sanitized message, the current page path and timestamps. The application removes reports older than 30 days when new reports are stored. Hosting access logs and database backups have separate provider retention settings.

The public leaderboard sends your chosen display name and completed chapter references to our server to calculate verified progress. Names and scores are public. Do not put private information in your public display name.

Optional services

If you enable encrypted sync, your browser encrypts library information before sending it to our server. We store the encrypted copy, a random sync identifier, an authentication hash, revision and update time. Keep your recovery code private: it gives access to that copy. Disconnecting a device does not delete the cloud copy.

If you enable notifications, the app asks permission and stores a push subscription, reminder time and time zone on the server. Your browser’s push provider delivers the notification. The contact picker and share sheet open only when you request them; selected contacts are displayed locally and are not uploaded to our application server.

On-device translation downloads a model from Hugging Face and its delivery providers. Online translation sends the requested text and language choices through our server to configured providers, which may include Google Translate, MyMemory or LibreTranslate. Do not submit private notes to online translation services.

Retention and deletion

Local library data stays until you clear it or your browser removes it. Encrypted cloud copies stay until deleted with their recovery credentials. Disable reminders to remove their server subscription. Public leaderboard entries, where available, can be removed using the originating browser. Provider backups may retain copies until their normal rotation. We do not operate advertising or sell personal information.

Delete your data explains local, cloud and support-assisted deletion. If you contact support by email, we use your message and address to respond; avoid including passwords or sync recovery codes.

Children and guardians

Parents and guardians should supervise optional online services and contributions and avoid entering a child’s identifying information. Contact us if you believe a child has supplied personal information that should be removed. Historic source material has not been assigned a universal age rating and can contain mature subjects.

Security and changes

Production network requests use HTTPS. Encrypted sync adds browser-side encryption; other server requests are not end-to-end encrypted. We update this policy when data handling changes. The date above identifies this version.
