Reading guides

Reading the Dhammapada

The Dhammapada is a collection of Buddhist verses. This guide points to F. Max Müller's translation from Pali, published in 1881 as part I of Sacred Books of the East volume 10. The shared contents page also includes the Sutta-Nipata, a separate work.

How to begin

Start with a small group of verses. Read them in order before choosing a line to save. In your notes, separate what the passage says from the example it brings to mind in your own life. Revisit both notes after a few days. When comparing translations, use verse numbers and check the nearby verses to keep the quotation in context.

A question to carry into your reading

What action or habit does this passage invite you to examine? Describe a concrete example while leaving room for another reader to understand the verse differently.
